NOBS News: Seasonal Update

We had a good game of touch on Sunday with some Christmas goodies, including Craig Morley’s shortbread!  Craig made an appearance, while the shortbread disappeared.

The holidays are upon us so there are a few dates you might want to keep in mind to work off some of the Holiday Cheer!

Starting with the DOME:
  • This week, Tuesday and Thursday is as usual.
  • Next Week on Thursday December 28 the dome is “open”  from 6 to 8:30.  This is open time for ALL to come for run around.  Just show up!
  • There is also the annual gnome bowl at New Years,  Sunday Dec. 31 - 11:30 –3pm, this is an all comers event.
Outside:
  • Christmas Eve is Sunday.  So we will start touch at 12:00 to accommodate family events and club events on the day.
  • On Boxing Day, Tuesday the 26th we are planning a 12:00 touch game outside (not dome)

Have a happy and safe time over the holidays, Ho Ho Ho

NOBS News: Pub Night/ Jerseys / Touch League / AGM

Thanks to Derek for organizing a relaxing a social pub night out on Friday.  It was a good turnout of NOBs, Ravi's Sri Lankan entourage, and then some regular Centaur folks.  An enjoyable evening.

My goodness, never has an email I have sent provided so much response.  Obviously, the NOBS group is stylish and care about what they wear….. The jerseys are being first ordered so they are available for the Fort Lauderdale Rugby event.  Once that is settled we will open up ordering to individuals who want there own kit.  This won't be until after the holidays.  So far it looks like style 4 is the preferred, and the most slimming design.

NOBS Touch – Touch continues up to the holidays Tues / Thurs.  I need to confirm what is happening over the holidays and will communicate once I do.

Touch League – The league will continue after the holidays as well, a new session starts up.  Our friend Ryan Hamilton-Miller is going to lead the charge on this.  If you want to play then please drop him an email at ryan@hamiltonmillers.com.  Or talk to him on Thursday.  The NOBs club will not be subsidizing the team, but is supportive!

AGM – Our AGM is scheduled for Sunday January the 14th it will happen after touch.  Please let me know if you are interesting in taking on a more active role next year.

Thanks

Phil

NOBs News: New Kit

It has been a number of years since the NOBS have seen some new kit.  Nick Manz has done some work to change this and has been working wiIth Carlsberg for some sponsorship.  The new kit will look great for the annual Florida trip.  There are 4 designs in play at this point.  General feedback has been either 3 or 4.  Always like to hear feedback and witty comments, so take a look and comment away.  Your comments may be taken into consideration….or not!   I am looking for a jersey which we can wear all the time whether opposition is light or dark, that way only one design is required.

The new kit will be “modern” fabric and fit, so sizes will not be what you are use to.  We will have some equivalent jerseys next Thursday at touch to get sizes sorted out so we don’t end up with a reasonable size profile.  I believe there will be opportunity to purchase your own kit, but details are still to be worked out.

Thanks to Nick for his work on this.

NOBS News: Various updates and Tid Bits

DOME News: We are coming to a close for the Fall Dome on Tuesday's and Thursday's.  I believe we go right up to  December 21st.  And there may be a Dec 28 night, but not sure.  After the Holidays we only have access to the Dome on Thursday nights from 6-7.  At this time we are only committing to a ½ Dome for the Thursday night based on our pre-Christmas numbers for the 6-7 time slot.  The Jan. to Mar. 17-week period will cost $150.00.  The League still continues, for those who want to play League you will need to enter your own team.  The NOBS will not enter the team on your behalf, but we can assist!

PUB NIGHT:  It has been some time since we have had some social time outside of the clubhouse.  We are planning a pub night at the Queen's Head in Burlington on Friday December 8th ~7:30.  Significant others more than welcome to attend. They are even encourage!  This is a drop in event given it is a busy time of year.  Hope to see you there.

Other News:  A number of you have been asking after Craig Morley over the past few weeks after he let everyone know he was diagnosed with ALS.  If you would like to visit Craig please give Tracy a call in advance to arrange a good time.  The address is 355 Appleby Line (just south of New Street and Fern Drive on the east side), Tracy's phone number is 905-681-3039.

We heard from our "one legged friend" this week Jimmy..

Hi Kevin, just in case anyone might be remotely interesting here is an update on me.Baz came to my house the week after my operation so that might have got to you. Since then I had the cast off at two weeks and went into a boot cast and everything was looking good the doc pleased no infection etc so he suggested I go to physio....so I had an appraisal and started last Friday and that;s when it all went wrong. I hopped down my steps and the short bit when we got there and I said my right ankle was sore. He said maybe ice for 10 mins and he suggested a wheel chair and Sandra called and in fact is picking it up today ( Monday). However Friday night when I tried to use the crutched to go to bed I couldn`t put weight on the right foot so I was quite literally legless!!

The surgeon had told me not to use anti inflamatories so all Sat I struggled and Sandra was dragging me around on an office type chair with wheels. By nightime I was in a lot of pain so I said sod it and took an anti inflamatory and lo and behold a pain level of 8 went down to about 4  and I had a good sleep but next day couldn`t put foot down again. THis morning we tried the surgeon but office was closed so we got our family doc. he ummed about the pills probably not wanting to go against the other doc. and talked about it being gout etc when it is obvious to me I am putting all my weight on a foot that hasn`t been 100% for years. Anyhow he came up with some new pills and hopefully by tomorrow or day after I will be on crutches again. Dick Sharman has emailed me and is going to pick me up for the fish and chips so I have that as my goal  for this week.

Give my regards to the dome crowd......Jim ( hopalong)

Where the hell is Keith's new hip?  I thought he would be strutting his stuff by now!

NOBS News: Cye Beechey Nov 5 and Nov 18

There are a couple of upcoming events to remember Cye Beechey on November 5 and November 18.  The information is below.

From John Truman....

Phil I know the rugby club is planning an event for Cye a week or so later but many people are asking about the arrangements for the one the family is planning for this Sunday Nov 5th. It will be at Appleby United Church on Spruce St in Burl at 2pm in case members of the NOBS would prefer to go to that….JKT

From the Centaurs....

Cye Beechey – Celebration of Life on Saturday, November 18th

During the final game of the Intermediate Cup the team wore wrist bands in memory of Centaurs' Lifetime Member, Cye Beechey. I know Cye was smiling down with pride on the Centaurs and the club when the Men's team won promotion on Saturday.  We will be honoring this Rugby Legend at the Clubhouse on Saturday, November 18th. Come by the club that afternoon to raise a pint in his memory, share stories and sing songs.

When: Saturday, November 18th 3:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Where: Rugby Clubhouse – 5270 Fairview Street, Burlington, ON

NOBS News: Da Thug

All, please see the message I received from Craig (aka Da Thug).  I think it speaks for itself.
Ladies and gentlemen.  Last April I finished up playing touch rugby,  I wasn't enjoy myself and experienced difficulty in keeping up.  I went to three nurosurgeons, 4 MRI's. enough blood test's to satisfy Dracula's thirst.  In the end I was told I had ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).  It's a difficult enemy, but will fight on.
FRIENDS THROUGH RUGBY, ARE FRIENDS FOR LIFE...  I love you guys, Da Thug

Nob News: DOME Update

So the dome is off to a good start.  We have great attendance on the Tuesday night 7-8.  Rolf tells me we have the entire dome to work with so if you are still interested Tuesdays is a good night for all. But make sure you see Rolf about the cost for participating, the dome is not free.

On Thursday, we have the 6-7 slot which is a pickup game using have the dome. For some it is a good warm up for the league play form 7 to 8:30.  Right now we have two teams entered in the league, but we have enough players for just over 1 team.  There were a number of players who indicated they were going to play but we have not seen yet.  No problem if life is busy, we can’t all make it all the time.  But there is a financial commitment the club is making entering the teams based on the commitments made.  As of right now, the club is footing the majority of the cost and we are far from break even.  It is $1,700 a team and we are asking $150/player.  I think we have around 13/14 signed up and paid leaving us well short of our ~20 we were expecting.  So, if you are still committed to being out, but maybe have not had the chance to make it out yet on Thursday please let me know.

Don’t forget Sunday @ 1:00 outside is always on!

Thanks
Phil

NOBS News: Chambray and DOME

What a fine looking team…but somehow I am missing?, it was a great Saturday at the park.  The “SLOBS” (SiLverbacks/NOBS) put together a fine performance.  There was good scrummaging, fast ball out, good hands to move the ball, and resulting in some good tries.  Talking with the GITS they were telling me this was one of their toughest game they have played.  It was good quality ball on both sides, the GITS never stopped playing and did some fine tackling.  Look closely at the picture, there are some faces we would like to see back out on the field on a more regular basis (think Pablo’s end of game appeal).  Thanks to those that were able to make the fixture and Hamilton for moving the fixture to Burlington, made for a great day.  Also a good spread of food curtesy of Gary, Rolf and others.

Moving on….
On Wednesday night 7:00 KO is the annual Chambray game (soccer pitch under the lights). This is always a good game with an opposition that understands discipline and never stop playing.  I have heard from a good number of players, but please make sure we have the turnout.  Past years we have had subs which is needed for such a young energetic group.

DOME
Tuesday 7-8 Dome #1 ($75)
Thursday 6-7 (open $75), 7-8:30 (league $150) Dome #1
Please make sure to bring your $$$ for Rolf.   For those playing league make sure to bring a green and white shirt.  The 6-7 time is open play time.

Fletcher’s – Cup Day
Just a reminder there is an ALL COMERS game (over 35) at Fletchers Fields 11:00 KO this Saturday.  Last year we had a good turnout for this end of year game. Just a reminder there is a $10 fee to get into the park.

Re: NOBs News: Games and Dome - CORRECTION(s)

OK...I should not do two things at once.  I am happy that some people read these emails.
- Game this Saturday is Oct 14th...not 18th
- Dome time on Tuesday is 7-8...not 6-7.  although if we said 6, we might start on time?!?

Sorry for the extra communication.....

NOBS News: Contact Game Oct 14 @1:00 (SANCTIONED) - Sherwood

Couple of pieces of information….

  1. Oct 14

Well, our next contact game is coming up fast on October 14th.  The game was originally scheduled to be played in Hamilton, but they have been very accommodating and the game has been moved to Burlington in advance of the big Centaur's game.  Thanks to the Silverbacks/Hornets.

The game is a 1:00 KO (sharp) to make sure we are done before the 3:30 KO.  The SILVERBACK/NOBS will combine forces to take on the GITS juggernaut.  With the game being moved Sherwood, I expect to see a good turnout from the NOBS/Centaurs (over 35)- Berties/Silverbacks.  The game is sanctioned, so any Centaur alumni who want a short run are more than welcome to have a go.

We will make arrangements for after event food, so we can sit back and watch the Centaurs take on the Yeoman at 3:30.

  1. Oct 21

The next contact game will be at Fletcher's Field on Saturday October 21 – Cup day 11:00 KO.  We did this game last year and had a good time.  This is an all comers game that will be sanctioned.  The last contact game of the year will be against Chambray, I am just waiting on field confirmation.  It will be late Oct or very beginning of November.

  1. DOME/Touch

We have been getting the lists together based on emails we have received.  I will check in with Rolf this week and communicate more net week.  The Tuesday dome starts Oct 17 and Thursday Oct 19.  We are still outside for now starting at 6:30 and always Sunday @ 1:00 – even on Thanksgiving!

Thanks For Now….

NOBS News - DOME UPDATE - Act Now.

DOME INFORMATION – We need to get our numbers so need you to respond.

The Dome times are set.

Tuesday October 17th – DOME #1 between 7-8 (1/2 dome) - COST = $75 for the Fall Session – Please remit fee to ROLF

Thursday October 19th – DOME#1
-  6-7 Open time for touch; COST = $75 for the Fall
-  Touch League (NOBS teams); COST = $150 for the Fall (the $150 includes the open time between 6-7)

I have heard from a number of players already confirm participation of Tuesday and Thursdays.  Please let me or ROLF know your commitment, if not already.
Please be specific on Thursday if you are in for the $75 or $150 so we can get the NOBS teams entered.  As I mentioned before we are looking to enter 2, maybe 3 teams in the League and to make up the teams each week.  The FALL league will not be an A level (like last year after Christmas).  Also you do not need need to be a NOBs member to be on the NOBs team….we welcome all strips.

NOBS News: DOME Info...

DOME Information

There has been some considerable back and forth on the Dome times again this year.  The good news there is a Tuesday 7-8 session for the fall period (Oct through Dec).  On Thursday’s there has been progress on getting our old time back from BYSC, however, it is still problematic.  For Thursday’s there is 6-7 time slot which we determined would limit the number of players able to make the 6 o’clock start.  At 7-8:30 the Centaurs are outsourcing the Touch, as they did last winter, to Canada Touch League.

For the Fall period, the NOBS are looking to enter 2-3 teams (20 to 30) to play in the league.  The concept is to change the teams every week based on the players that show up, to change things up each week.  The Fall session will not be as competitive as what you may have seen last year.  I think if we have a good mix we can have a good run and be challenged while still having a good time.  What we need is a head count ASAP so we can set the DOME fees.  The DOME will start I believe the 2nd week in October so don’t delay.  Our focus on Thursday will be to participate in the League, but the 6-7 slot is still available for touch as the club (Centaurs and NOBS) are being essentially forced into taking the hour to keep the 7-8:30 time slot.

Please let me and/or Rolf know if you are signing up for Tuesday’s and/or the Thursday Touch.  If you have any questions I will be around the club this Thursday and on Sunday.

Thanks
Phil

Following a diagnosis of a very aggressive cancer two months ago, Cye Beechey passed away last evening in peace alongside Maysie.

He was a rugby legend that shaped not only our club but also the sport of rugby in Burlington.

He was a mentor, a father figure, a coach, a club President and a Lifetime Member.

He was the embodiment of our club slogan “Friends through Rugby…Friends through Life”.  Everyone loved Uncle Cye.

And Cye loved the club and all of the players throughout the years.

Just recently he asked “ How did the boys do on Saturday?” He was told they won the game handedly, Cye raised a triumphant fist into the air “YES! Tell them to keep it up!”

He will forever live in our hearts.

A Celebration of Life will be announced to honour this Rugby Legend.

NOBs News: GITS Game and Upcoming fixtures.

GIT/Saracens - 80 minutes of rugby was a bit more than expected but a good effort with some fine back play and some good defending (at times).  Thank you all for the turn out, we had 18 players out giving some of us a bit of a breather as we did 4 x 20 min against 2-sides.  One unfortunate injury was Denis who went off with a torn bicep injury, which is requiring surgery.  As an old boy game it was a bit more spirited than usual, from both sides.  But in the end, a good day out.

Our next contact game is in HAMILTON, Saturday October 14 @2:00 against the GITS.  This is a sanctioned event.

We are also working on scheduling a game with Chambray's on October 18 or 25th, we just need to confirm a pitch.  The game will be local to Burlington, ideally the lighted soccer pitch if Barry can work his magic and we put 25 cents in the light meter.

Finally, October 21 we are working on a game at Fletcher's (McCormick Cup Day) for a season topper which will be an all-comers event.

We will share details once we confirm things.

Just a reminder Tuesday and Thursday touch to start at 6:30

Thanks

Phil

Nick reminded me of the following also this Sunday

Also this Sunday the NOBS are invited to participate in Davy Jone & Terri's Stag & Doe Rugby Event at the club.

We have secured Rugby Festival Insurance for any players wishing to participate in a friendly game between club members & friends.

The game kicks off at 3:00 pm on the main pitch with food and games upstairs in the clubhouse afterwards.

All proceeds will go towards covering the food and towards the future Bride & Groom.

This Sunday September 3rd there is still touch happening.  But, the main field is being used up to around 1:30 by Ontario Rugby for some 7's.

We have some contact games (note they are on Saturday):
1. GITS at East York Collegiate - Saturday, September 16 @ 2:00.  If you want a evening in the City, what a great opportunity!
2. Silverbacks/NOBs in Hamilton versus the GITS - Saturday, October 14 @ 2:00
We need to confirm numbers for the Sept 16th game.  So let me know you are in....

There is also a call out for Sept 30.  There is the Coburg Golden Rod, as well I heard from our friends in Buffalo about a Alumni game for over 40's in advance of their pub crawl.
We are also looking to have an all comers as part of McCormick cup day up at Fletcher's on Saturday, October 21.  We did this last year and despite the wind and cold was a great way to finish thing off.

The other week the NOBs took on the BOTSL in the second leg of the annual soccer game.  The twist was the game was half soccer and touch rugby.  It was a great evening and we saw some faces we have not seen around for awhile (always a good thing).  I believe the NOBs won the second leg of this epic battle!  Although, it could have been we need to provide the soccer side a few of our players.  Thanks to John Guilfoyle for organizing the event and to Rolf and Kevin for keeping us fed and watered.

Thanks

Fw: NOBs Annual Cricket Match 2017 - The Match Report

Gentlemen

Need I say more.

Test cricket at its finest and a huge thank you to all

the gentlemen who stepped in at the last minute to make this

another successful NOB's fixture.

Same time next year then ?

Subject: NOBs Annual Cricket Match 2017 - The Match Report

Despite rumours to the contrary the NOBs Annual Cricket match went ahead as planned on Sunday 13th August. Our traditional opponents the Burlington Welsh Male Chorus were unable to field a complete side, but two of their number, Barrie Llewellyn (Baz) and John Griffiths (Griff) ,made the effort to come along and provide token representation for the the choir!

The two Ravis brought along a number of Sri Lankan players to bolster the numbers, and together with the NOBs that had committed to attend we managed to make up two sides, "Lucky's Nomads" and the "Clarence Brown All-Stars.

The traditional NOBs cricket rules applied, no-one could be out first-ball, any batsman scoring over 25 had to retire, and all team members had to bowl at least one over.

Clarence won the toss and elected to bowl, forcing Lucky's team to bat first, it was to prove a good decision.

We took to the field bathed in glorious sunshine, with the batting for Lucky's Nomads being opened by JP Ouellette.  JP proved that lack of classical cricket technique is no barrier to scoring runs and quickly amassed a total of 29 scoring 4 sixes, 1 four, and a single run..and then had to retire (thankfully).  Chuck Schandl then provided the comedy moment of the afternoon by hitting his own wicket, and being given out for 1 run. High scorers for the Nomads included Ravi with 26 Not Out, and Ivan with 22 Not out. The final total was 108 after 20 overs were bowled.

After a short "tea" interval (ie..sandwiches & beer) the All-Stars took up the challenge with Bob Cunningham & Derek Wiggins opening the batting.  Despite being hampered by a knee brace, Bob scored a workmanlike 7 before having to retire. Derek went on to score 30 not-out (including 3 sixes and 4 fours), Kishnan hit some magnificent power strokes to clear the boundary on a number of occasions retiring on 25 not-out, and the evergreen Clarence Brown worked his way to a hard fought 26 not-out. The wayward bowling of the Nomads proved to be their downfall with Extras (wides, byes etc) totalling 17 being added to the batting total of 92 for Clarence's team carrying them to victory with 109 runs one over to spare.

It was a great afternoon of fun cricket, and would have been made even better if we had more support from the NOBs membership in the form of players turning up.

A big thank you to everyone who played, brought extra players along, made food for the intervals.

Here are a few photos of the afternoon.

Many thanks,

Derek Wiggins

CRICKET MATCH IS ON

Morning all

Loose talk and "Fake news" about a possible cancelation of

the NOB's annual Cricket match was met with outrage and

condemnation by our membership with the result that we now

have overwhelming support for the fixture.

( Who does this sound like?)

Be at the clubhouse by 12.30 for a 1.00 start

As this match falls into the international test category

white attire is "de rigueur"

Afternoon tea will be complimented with refreshments

provided by players, guests and a mystery donor.

As Jimmy Savile would say " Be there or be square"

I was told, no cryptic messages, but nobody said anything

about being politically correct.

See ya there

Hi Rolf,

I got the e-mail below from John Truman regarding the cricket..😬.

Can you e-mail the NOBs membership and ask them to confirm their attendance at the cricket on Sunday directly with me (derekwiggins@hotmail.com), if we don't have enough numbers I will have to consider cancelling.

Thanks,

Derek

Hi John,

We're planning on having the annual Cricket Match on Sunday 13th August...can you let your members know, and then get back to me about a week before with a rough idea of numbers. It's a bit less notice than I would have preferred but we've got a lot of conflicting events this year unfortunately.

We'll be doing the usual format with the bar open etc...

Many thanks for your e-mail about Cye Beechey, all the NOBs send our best wishes for his return to good health!

Best regards,

Derek
