NOBS News - GAME ON!

GAME ON!  Sunday May 1st is the Season Opener.

At 1:00 there are 4-teams squaring off at Sherwood Park - GITS, Bruce County, Hamilton and NOBS. Festival Coverage will be in place so if you have not registered for Contact you will be covered.  Doesn’t get better than this to start the season!  We ask that you show up ready to go for 1:00, with four teams we want to get things going on time (a strange concept for masters rugby!).

There will be TOUCH starting at 12:00, bring a friend.  Touch is also a good warmup for the 1:00 game.

As a reminder, On Friday April 29 we have a Membership /Pub Night at the club house.  This event is open to ALL, so bring your significant other or a friend.  If you are paid up, still drop by.  Paying your annual fees ($100 – Contact, Touch; $25 Social) will get you a free pint.  We encourage the wearing of club ties to show your colours.

A few more house keeping matters:

  • Attached is the Season Schedule (as of April 14), so you can plan ahead.
  • Touch starts outside next week on Tuesday and Thursday (7:00 start).

Look forward to seeing you there……Cheers.

CALLING ALL NOBs - Club House Clean up

All, Tomorrow (Sunday) we are planning to do a Club House clean up to make everything ship shape for next week.  So channel your inner Molly Maid and give use a few hours of your time.  We are starting at 11:00 and will be done in time for touch.  So consider it a warm up (wax on – wax off).  Bring a bucket some rags/cloths and we will have the eco friendly cleaners.

One last note, please check your email in the morning.  If there is any change in the time I will put out another email.  No news means we are good to go.

Your help and commitment is appreciated.
Thanks
Phil

Return of the BURLINGTON BERTIES – Please distribute to the NOBS membership

With the great success of hosting an exhibition 3rd XV team in 2015, the Centaurs have decided to revitalize the BERTIES to compete competitively in the NRU B Division.

The BERTIES, Burlington Experienced Rugby Team in The Extremist, were an integral part of the Burlington Centaurs and the NOBS rugby organizations. It is a great pleasure to bring this team back to its original luster to the rugby pitch. (See the original news article from the archives re: BERTIES attached)

Being an ‘experienced’ Rugby Team within the NOBS/Centaurs organization it is understood that life and work commitments may come into play during the rugby season and throughout the work week but when available let it be known once again that SATURDAY IS A RUGBY DAY!

There is no mandatory attendance to practice required to be eligible to play with the Burlington Berties. Only that you make your availability known to the head coach Jon Goldie -  jonathan.goldie@hotmail.com

The BERTIES are a great opportunity for NOBS, alumni players and rugby players new to the club to come together on the field as one. “Friends through Rugby, Friends through Life”

NOBS News and Entertainment - April 14, 2016

A couple of announcements:

First, a good night at the Niblick with Bob Nye and company providing the entertainment.  Nice to see so many out for a pint and to support Bob.

I just heard that Tim has secured a spring fixture with the Chambray’s.  The game will be on Wednesday May 25th.  The best part is Chambray will be hosting.  It has been some time since we have been hosted by Chambray and I am told they are the most hospitable group!  It was a great game last November and this game will be against the same group.  They are located in the 401/Avenue Road area so we will be looking into travel arrangements (safety first!).  More details to follow – put this one on the calendar!

On a final note, there will be another email following with information from the Centaurs.

Thanks
Phil

NOBS News and Entertainment - April 11, 2016

A couple of reminders for this week of upcoming events:

1.      DOME times are back to the regular 7:00 start (three more weeks of indoor touch).

2.      The Niagara Old Boys presents its first Pub Night of 2016, at the Niblick Pub (Wednesday, April 13).  Come for dinner, stay for the entertainment: Bob Nye Sings Frank Sinatra  and others. Its going to be a lot of fun and we are looking to pack the place.  Get there early if you want a seat near the stage. The Niblick Pub, 1011 Upper Middle Rd E, Oakville.

From the Social Committee of the Niagara Old Boys Rugby Football Club.

If you have an event you think we should do, call Michael H Howes 905-517-6358

Or michael@2waconsulting.com

3.      Club Membership Night Friday, April 29 (7:00 to 9:00) Come talk to Rolf about your fees.  Rumour has it there will be a beer ticket that goes with that membership!  This night is for all members (touch/contact; short/tall; in shape/out of shape…).

4.      And yes, Sunday May 1st is the Season Opener.  This day will have “Festival Coverage” so if you have not registered for “contact” you will be covered.  There will be four teams that day including Bruce County, GITs, Hamilton and the NOBS….a competitive slate. Kick-off 1:00.

But hold on, there is more! This is not just a Contact game day.  This is also the Season Opener of outdoor TOUCH SUNDAY.  We are looking to expand our SUNDAY TOUCH games and recruit new folks ( men and woman).  No experience is necessary, and if you are not sure, come out and give it a try.  There will be experienced players there to help.  Kick-off for TOUCH SUNDAY will be 12:00 (special time because of the 1:00 games scheduled).

Have a good week!  Hope to see you at the Nublick.

Phil

NOBS News and Entertainment - April 3, 2016

Four pieces of News and Entertainment to share:

No. 1
What is up with the weather?  Thank goodness we still have touch rugby in the dome for four more weeks before hitting the real turf!  We have just found out there will be slight change in the starting times for the dome next week.  Please see the times for the remaining Tuesday and Thursday sessions:
  • Tuesday April 5th - Start time is 8:00 finishing at 9:00
  • Thursday April 7 – Start time is 8:00 finishing at 9:00
  • For Tuesday April 12, 19 and 26 – the same 7:00 to 8:00 slot
  • For Thursday April 14, 21 and 28 – the same 7:00 to 8:00 slot
You may also find that Dome 2 and 3 may no longer be up and functional.  Just go to the dome that is still up (logical).  We know two of them are coming down soon, just not sure when.

No: 2
The season kickoff will be Sunday May 1st.  It will be a Rugby Ontario “Festival Event” (so if you have not registered for contact by that time you can still play).  The club pays for ORU coverage fee, which provides coverage for that day to any player.  My understanding is this day will involve a number of teams including the GITS and Bruce County! So dust off your boots and please wash your kit for this upcoming event! Details to follow.

No. 3
Prior to the May 1 season opener there will be a Membership Club Night on Friday April 29th.  Bring along your Annual Membership fee and if you need help signing up for contact we should be able to help you through the process.  It is also an opportunity to reacquaint yourself with your team mates and plan strategy for May 1st – what are the line out calls again?  The event will be at Sherwood club house, starting I believe around 7:00 and ending at 9:00.  But you can stay later - further details to follow.  Mark it on your calendar.

No. 4
Last but definitely not least.  Bob Nye our resident crooner is performing again at the Niblick ,Wednesday April 13 starting at 7:00.  There were rave reviews from his March 16th performance.  Get out and support Bob, enjoy a pint, and bring a friend.  (Niblink - 1011 Upper Middle Rd E, Oakville, ON L6H 4L3)
