NOBS WORLD SEPTEMBER 28TH 2010

Good afternoon Rugby fans all across the World of Nobs. We are travelling to Peterborough for a game with the Kroc’s this Sunday at 1pm.  I need to hear from you on your plans for Sunday whether you plan to car pool, drive on your own, etc.  We are looking for a good turn out, so let me hear if you’re planning to go.  By now if you played in the dome last season you have heard from the Dnome Ranger that the deadline is fast approaching to sign up for this winter of touch in the dome.  There is a waiting list in place so if you snooze you’ll lose.

Last Sunday there were 40 players out for the Markham/Lions fixture.  The teams were evenly matched with plenty of trys and lots of hard hitting.  We didn’t have the opportunity to announce this but the player of the match who played like a man possessed when he handled the ball was Clarence Brown.  Well done Clarence!  Let’s hear from you about Sunday and don’t delay on your plans to play in the dome, Da Thug

NOBS WORLD , GAME THIS WEEKEND, DOME TIME APPROACHES, 10'S AND A FLASH FROM THE PAST!!

Good afternoon rugby fans where ever you are on this last day of summer, or for our friends in the southern hemisphere; the last day of winter!  We held our 10’s last Sunday at the Cru, more on that in a bit but first let’s deal with what’s going on this week and next.  Touch continues on Tuesday and Thursdays, come out early to take advantage of what light we have.  This Sunday we are at home in Burlington as we welcome the Markham/Lions squad with a fixture kicking off at 1pm.  Next Sunday, October 3rd, we head east on the 401 for a game with Peterborough.  Car pooling will be organizing so stay tuned for further updates.  Touch will be run in Burlington on both days.  Speaking of touch we here at Nobs World have received word from the Dome Ranger himself, the Super Gnome that we will soon be going inside the dome for touch.  Tentative date is October 14th.   If your one of the lucky ones who played last season you’ll have already been contacted by the law firm of Burnett & Morrison that if you want to play this season pay up! For those of you who did not play in the dome last year a waiting list is being formed as we speak.  If you would like to be added to the list you can either speak directly to Dave or Jack, or contact them at deburnett@sympatico.ca or s.j.morrison@sympatico.ca. Please remember that you must be a least a fully paid social member to participate.

So how did the 10’s go?  First off I have to thank the Crusaders for looking after us on short notice.  The post game food was top drawer.  Thank you ladies.  We had 48 players participate, divided into four teams.  There was spirited competition with the Peter Allan Greens winning out with a record of 2 wins and a tie.  Protests as to the final results were entered but after official review; too bad, the final scores stand!  The referees, Hadis Fetic and Scott Fleming handled the games with unquestionable ability and authority.  Each team selected a man or in the case of one squad, a lady of the tournament.  For the Peter Allan Greens it was Welsh Phil of the Muddy York.  The Leek’s of Jason selected Carrie Ciancone.  Keith McIntyre was the representative of The Mighty Bloska’s and Frank Tombo was selected by the Men of Mant’s.  Our man of the tournament was not on hand after the games to receive his award so I would like to do it now.  This player came out Sunday ready to go but never got to play.  He made the ultimate sacrifice for team mates but finished in the hospital.  This year’s winner is Dick Sharman!  [What you thought it was Neal who hurt his shoulder again!?] Dick came out to take in the day’s festivities, but when Neil went down early in his first game with another shoulder injury, [he had just returned from one in early May] Dick did what any good team mate would do and stepped in to drive Neil to the hospital and fore go his post game beverage and grub.  Well done and thank you Dick.  “Ask not what your team can do for you; ask what you can do for your team!’  We close today with a flash from the past and a photo from Kurt Tamowski and a past fall visit to Buffalo in or around 1997 or 98.  See if you can spot Mel C.  See you on the pitch, Da Thug

NOBS WORLD SEPTEMBER 21ST 2010

Here's a heartfelt note from a good friend and team mate of ours.

From: David Burnett

Subject: Brian Scherer

Craig,

Perhaps you could circulate the following information on our old friend Brian.

Dear NOBS,

Please excuse me for sending out this rather sad information update.  I realize some may not care or even know Brian and few are as attached as I am to him, but after 35 years that is to be expected.  No, this is not a eulogy, but many NOBS ask after Brian's health and currently it is anything but good news.

Over many years we have all known the Brain Scherer of yesterday and enjoyed his rather boisterous company on many, many occasions.  Over the last far too many years we have watched his penchant for the evil beverage take complete control of his life.  There but for the grace of god many of us could so easily follow.

Last evening Diane and I visited Brian in the Hamilton General, Intensive Care Unit.  To say the least it was heart breaking to look down on what was once a viral, upbeat and smart man now a wizen shell of the former self.   Yes, he brings it all upon himself, but that is what alcoholism does if it isn't checked early.  It is a terrible disease and results in many rotten issues beginning with loss of good judgment.  In Brian's case as so many other alcoholics, loss of his wife of many, many years who he respects and loves dearly.  So also, some of his family and many of his friends, loss of his driving license, his home and perhaps above all his self respect.   The latter eventually leading to a total breakdown in his health.

Brian has Alcoholic Hepatitis, an ulcerated stomach, damaged pancreas, restricted heart condition, damaged feet from frost bite, to name a few serious issues.  The doctors are having a tough time stabilizing his blood pressure and oxygen count and he is currently forced to remain prone to maintain reasonable stability.  It is bad enough for the staff to ask him if he wants them to try to save him or let him go.  He isn't sure.

Brian has been struggling to stop drinking, but does not have the willpower to see it through and he has not been able to eat for some time.  He stopped drinking (again!) about 10 days ago and had also checked in to a Detox centre.  Due to a severe drop in blood pressure while in Detox, he was sent to his cardiologist and from there to emergency last Wednesday.  He is hoping to recover and go into a rehab facility, but of course we have heard that before.  Time will tell.

He needs a bit of cheering up and I will get a "Get well" card for the NOBS to sign over the next few days.  Hopefully it may help to spur him on to sorting himself out.  If indeed it isn't already too late.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I needed to share it with a few others.

Dave

P.S. He sends his regrets, he will not be joining the Fish and Chip meeting this Friday

FW: NOBS 10 A-SIDE SEPTEMBER 19TH 2010

This is the note that we sent out to all the clubs invited to our 10’s this coming Sunday.  Both rugby and touch are at the Cru this Sunday and all are invited to our post game spread.  Da Thug

Gentlemen, just a reminder of our 10 a-side tournament this Sunday.  Originally this was to be held in Burlington, but has now been moved to Crusaders Park in Oakville.  The park is located at 2214 9th Line, Oakville Ontario.  The club phone number is 905-338-7533.  You can go to the Crusaders web site for maps and directions to the park.  Kickoff for the first game is set for noon, but please try and be there for 11:30 to sign in and get dressed.  If you have some older players who don’t want to play rugby we are going to run 2 touch games of 20 minutes which will be worked into the days schedule.  For those of you not familiar with our 10’s we take all the players who come out and put them into 4 teams.  Each team will play 3; 20 minute games, with each game split into 2; 10 minute halves.  There will be 3 forwards and 7 backs, with the scrums being uncontested and the scrum half must pass the ball from the scrum.  The team that scores will restart the game with a kickoff.  All other laws of rugby apply.  To avoid teams having to play back to back games we will slot in the 2 touch games.  There is lots of running so each team needs spares.  One last thing if you have a set of jerseys can you bring them along for easy identification of each team.  After the games are done it will be up into the Cru clubhouse for something to eat and post game drinks and presentations.  Guests are welcome and they are also invited to join in our post game feast.  If you have any questions please contact me, if not I will see you Sunday at the Cru.  Craig

NOBS WORLD SEPTEMBER 13 "CHANGE OF VENUE FOR THE 10'S"

Good morning rugby fans, in the Nobs World.  I have an important announcement for the upcoming 10’s tournament this coming Sunday but first let’s talk about yesterday’s game in Markham.  We had a nice turn out for our fixture with the combined Markham / Lions side.  Weather was great for a rugby game; rain over night had left the field nice and soft.  Afterwards the Grey Hares provided us with all the burgers we could eat.  That’s about it!  We came out on the short end of the stick in the score department and as my mom always says, “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all!’

This Sunday due to a scheduling conflict with the Centaurs our 10 a-side tournament has been moved to Crusaders Park in Oakville.  Everything else is still the same.  Things get underway at noon with a full slate of rugby and touch games.  There will be no rugby in Burlington this Sunday so whether you plan on playing rugby or touch it will all happen at the Cru.  We will be looking for volunteers to help us out at 11am.  Please be dressed and ready to go for 11:30am.  See you at the Cru this Sunday, Da Thug

Fwd: Italy tour

NOBS - great opportunity to play Rugby in Italy next May. I had the privilege of joining Colin's tour to Portugal last year and it was definitely one of the best tours I've been on.  We need a few more players, so I hope you can make it. I've already sent my $500 deposit. $1,500 for 11 nights, 5 cities, 4 games - let's go! :-)

Cheers!

Hi everyone,

This e mail is being sent out to everyone on my list who may be interested in the tour to Italy next May as it may change somewhat and some others may want to join in.

At this date,I have only 13 deposits from players at this time.  Several folks have asked if the tour can be reduced in length.  I have contacted Jos'e over in Europe and this is the latest offer.  Hopefully, this may stimulate some response. Still arriving in Milan on May  7th.  I have several tourist couples lined up to go, once we get the players situation confirmed.
2 nights Milan + game
3 nights Treviso, tour to Venice + lunch and game
3 night Florence + game and city tour
3 nights Rome +game and city tour
$ games may be too much but we can cancel one if reqd.
Cost is now $1125Euros or at todays rate= $1496 for 11 nights
Playing/dress shirts will be extra.

This is still based on 50 people and Jos'e can arrange an extra 3 nights in Sorento for those wishing to stay longer, but again, we need the numbers.  Can someone from each club pass this on to all non-players as well as players for their attention.  We need to get this settled ASAP so I have decided that Sunday Sept  26th is the cut off date for a go or not.  Thhis promises to be a fantastic tour, so kplease give it your full attention.

many thanks

Colin
PS:  Jason Currie, would you please pass this on to all the other club contacts. Thanks
