NOBs News - Chambray tonigth - Silverback June 5th

Chambray tonight 7:00 KO at Bayview Middle Schools – 25 Bunty Lane (Bayview/401).  There is a bus leaving Sherwood Park at 5:30, otherwise plan on being at the park by 6:30.

On Sunday June 5th the NOBS are being hosted by the Silverbacks.  The game will be played at the Mohawk Sport Park, on Field #1.  I am told it is field closest to the Clubhouse parallel to Upper Kenilworth (map link below).  It is a 1:00 KO.  The Silverback game is a sanctioned game (festival coverage), so if you have not registered for contact, you will still be covered.   Always a good time with the Silverbacks, and they are fine hosts.

Last note, and an entertainment note to boot.  Bob Nye informed me that the Wednesday night  Cooners series at the Niblick Pub is taking a summer hiatus, but will be back in the fall.

Thanks

Phil

FIXTURE ALERT - Bruce County to be Rescheduled

All:

Sorry to say, but we will need to reschedule the Bruce County game.  There are just not enough committed players for tomorrow to give Bruce County a good game.

In the end, we will need to do a better job of getting commitment from players to support Old Boys Rugby.

Thanks

Phil

NOBS News - Bruce County and Chambray Reminder

All, we have confirmed about 8 players for Bruce County (thanks to those that have responded)  We need to get some more bodies for this game confirmed . Time to respond if you have not already.  Please let Tim and me know you are available.  Details from the previous email are below.  Please respond to    timothy.ellis@sympatico.ca, and phil.gray@cogeco.ca.

Sunday, May 29th

It is game time!  This Sunday May 29th is our first away game in Bruce County.  Last year we played at the Tiverton Sports Arena (McLaren St, Tiverton, ON N0G 2T0), so we can assume it will be at the same location.  This is about a 2:45 hr drive assuming you take a short break and generally stick to the rules of the road.  After an outstanding opening day, let’s not disappoint our opposition.  Bruce County is a good side and are willing to travel to play games, we need to show the same commitment and support.

Given a 1:00 Kickoff – a departure of no later than 10:00 is advised from the Burlington area.  For those interested in car pooling meet at 9:45 at Sherwood for a 10:00 sharp departure.  In your response, let us know if you want to car pool.  Dust off the cleats, it is game time!

Tuesday, May 31 – Chambray

We have confirmed the field for the game - Bayview Middle School - 25 Bunty Lane, North York, ON - Kickoff 7:00

There are shower facilities at the college for the post-game stuff for those that are inclined.  We want to get a head count for the game, and Chambray would like to know for food preparation.  So again, let us know if you are coming.

We looked at getting a bus, but so far not enough interest to move ahead.

Any questions let me know

Phil

NOBs News - Calling all NOBs - Response needed to May 29 and May 31 contact games

Your prompt response is needed to both events

Sunday, May 29th

It is game time!  This Sunday May 29th is our first away game in Bruce County.  Last year we played at the Tiverton Sports Arena (McLaren St, Tiverton, ON N0G 2T0), so we can assume it will be at the same location.  This is about a 2:45 hr drive assuming you take a short break and generally stick to the rules of the road.  After an outstanding opening day, let’s not disappoint our opposition.  Bruce County is a good side and are willing to travel to play games, we need to show the same commitment and support.

Given the importance of this away game, we need to get a head count, a simple YES or NO will do (Yes is preferred).  Please respond to    timothy.ellis@sympatico.ca, chuckschandl@gmail.com, and phil.gray@cogeco.ca.   I heard from Mike Olney (YES), and when I talked with Ted last Friday he was a YES.

Tuesday, May 31st

What another game!

Who: NOBs and Chambrays

What: Friendly Rugby Match

Where: Field – To be confirmed, Post-Game – Armour Heights Officers’ Mess at 215 Yonge Blvd, North York, ON at the intersection of Wilson Avenue

Why: To pay you back for your hospitality at the beginning of the year and to all previous Chambrays squads

When: kickoff - 31 May at 7:00pm

Yes, it is that time of year again to take on the Chambrays.  This is a follow up to our game at the end of October last year.  This is always a good game and fine company.  This year Chambray will be hosting the NOBS, a special event.  We are looking into getting a bus for transportation, at this time I do not have details.  Again, can we get a head count for this game (yes/no) and if you are interested in bus transportation.  Please respond to timothy.ellis@sympatico.ca, chuckschandl@gmail.com, and phil.gray@cogeco.ca.  Fans are welcome to come for the event!

Sunday Touch will still be on at Sherwood.

NOBs News - May 17th

With the upcoming Victoria Weekend it is a quiet weekend.  There will be Touch on Sunday as well as our regular Tuesday and Thursday nights.

To start the weekend off right there is a pub night at the Queen’s Head in Burlington on Friday May 20th.  A casual evening, so drop in and bring a friend.  Just a good way to start the weekend.  We are suggesting a 6:00 to 9:00, but what works for you!  Hope to see you there.  There is pool, darts and good company.

Upcoming events:
  • May 28, Roddy Allen Tourcement – Centaur’s
  • Our first away game (contact) is Sunday May 29th in Bruce County (2hrs).  We need to get a good turn out to make this a good game.  Bruce County is willing to make the trip to our Region, we need to do the same.  I hope it will be warmer than last year.
  • Right after, Tuesday May 31 is the Chambray game, always a favourite.  We will be playing the same group as last year.  Further details to follow.  We are looking into transportation options.
  • June 5 is a game with the Silverbacks.
Reminder, if you want to play contact you need to be registered with National and Ontario Rugby – Follow the link on NOBS registration tab on web site.

NOBs News - Fixture Cancellation

Couple of mid-week announcements…..

Fixture Cancellation (CONTACT)  – Unfortunately we just heard that our Contact fixture with the Silverbacks this Sunday May 15th has been canceled.  The Silverbacks were having problems securing numbers.  Well, with cancellation comes opportunity!  How about you Contact players coming out for Touch Sunday and making it into a mini tournament all we need is enough for 3 to 5 sides together.  You will get your run around and won’t get bumped around as much – beware of Ravi!  This is an all comers event - young, old, men, women and kids all welcome.  If you can get there by 12:45 we will make up the sides from there.  Chuck tells me there will be a prize beyond bragging rights.

Just a reminder that Bob Nye is at the Nublick tonight and hits the stage at 7:00.

Finally, next Friday, May 20th is a social Pub Night for all (no ties required).  We will be hosted at the Queen’s Head in Burlington (400 Brant St, Burlington).  Start time around 6:00 and going to 9:00 or beyond.  This is a bring a friend event, so all welcome.   Drop by and find us in the games room (pool, darts, etc.).   Next pub night we will be going into Oakville to move it around.

That’s all…for this week.

Phil

NOBs News - The Opening Weekend in Review.

Season Opener Weekend Wrap Up

Well what a weekend it was, Club Night / Membership Night Friday and Festival Games on Sunday.  By all accounts a great start to the 2016 season.

Please read the entire email, there are important upcoming events

Club /Membership Night:

Although not able to attend, I did hear it was a great night.   I understand Eric Andrae draped his 6-month old son in a club tie to get a free President’s beer.  Another notable item was the selection of cheese to go with the wine pairing brought to us by Cristina Flores.   Rolf collected full membership dues for 16 individuals as well as a couple of social members.  Overall, an excellent first ever Club Night that we will be looking to repeat on a quarterly basis.  What was great to see were new NOBs at the event as well as some past members surfacing for the event! Thank you to all that attended, and more thanks to those that helped make this happen.  Stay tuned for the next Club Night.

Game Day:

TOUCH - David Tait reported a great turnout for touch rugby on Opening Day Sunday, despite the rather cold and damp weather. A number of new players including four new ladies gave it a try.   The game was played at a hectic pace as usual, and despite one of the ladies being bowled over by a rampaging Ravi, they all said they had enjoyed the experience and would come back.  We are looking to expand the Sunday / Tuesday / Thursday touch program to be inclusive of all skill level, so if you know someone that would be interested bring them along next Sunday or during the week.

CONTACT - The eagerly awaited opening of the 2016 Old Boys contact rugby season was a three team tournament featuring the NOB's, GITS, Bruce County, and supported by a number of players from the Silverbacks (Hamilton and Grimsby). In cold and damp conditions the first match was between the GITS and Bruce County, the hotly contested match featured lots of action. The second match featured the NOB's and GITS, the strong NOB"s pack produced clean and quick ball allowing their back line to run in 5 tries, the GITS fought back to finally score a try at the final whistle. The third and final match of the day featured the NOB's and Bruce County, the match went back and forth with the NOB's finally prevailing 2 tries to 1.

Special thanks to those that helped out in a big way to the success: virtuoso grilling by Baz and Kevin; bartending by Johan and Dave and Andy Maunder.  I suspect there were more unsung heroes that made the day a big success.  And thanks to all our friends from GITS, Bruce County, and Silverbacks (Hamilton/Grimsby) for helping us celebrate the start of the 2016 season!

Overall, a grand weekend to start 2016.

Upcoming Events for May:

·        Touch every Tuesday and Thursday outside starting at 7:00

·        Touch every Sunday @ 1:00

·        For the May 8 weekend it is Mother’s day so there are no Contact games, but there will be Sunday Touch.

·        Sunday, May 15th Contact game at home with the Silverbacks.

·        Friday May 20 – Pub Night, location TBD

·        Tuesday, May 31th Contact game - Away Chambray (special event - NOTE THE CHANGE OF DATE from previous communications)

·        Sunday, May 29th Contact game – Away, Bruce County

Final note – IF YOU ARE PLAYING CONTACT YOU MUST REGISTER ONLINE WITH RUGBY ONTARIO/CANADA.  You can do this on line through the
NOBS web site (Masters $99 and change)
