NOBS News: Cricket Review

Derek put together a great afternoon of Cricket where the NOBs side were able to out bat the Welsh Choir.  Although there were a few scoring irregularities, there was agreement on the conclusion.  NOBs success came from some great batting by Bob Nye, Chuck, Derek, Ravi and Clarence….the rest of us got to relax and watch the magic. Our bowling, at times was challenging for the Welsh Choir, but good enough to keep the game going.  Chuck did some great bowling along with Yohan, and Kevin was showing off his diving skills as keeper.  Best dressed was Rolf with his finest whites and how he got the creases so crisp on his pants and shirt - who knows! Needless to say the mid–match break of sandwiches and samosas was welcome with a cool beverage.  Thanks to Derek and the Welsh Choir for a fine afternoon.   A few pictures to admire the fine whites.

Our next social event is a pub night on Sept 17th and out next contact game is our 10-a-side on Sept 25.

Thanks
Phil

Subject: Centaurs' Weekend Recap - Trinidad & Tobago vs U19 Ontario Blues - TOMORROW

Centaurs, Alumni & Rugby Fans!

TOMORROW NIGHT – Tuesday, August 23 – KO @ 7:00 pm

The Centaurs host the U19 Ontario Blues vs the Junior National Trinidad & Tobago  at Sherwood Forest Park

Our own U18 Centaur – GRAEME FRANCOLINI has been selected to play with the U19 Ontario Blues! Come out and show your support for an up & coming Centaur!

This past weekend marked the end of the season for several of the Centaurs teams including the Centaurs II’s, the BERTIES and the women’s teams.

After a challenging week for the Burlington Centaurs men with tough loses back to back from Niagara and Hamilton 1st XV, the club came together to field a team with the BERTIES travelling to Wilmot for a touch game and the Centaurs 2nd XV travelling back to Hamilton with the Abercarn Shield on the line.

The Burlington Centaurs 2nd XV pulled together to field a team with minimal subs. Thanks to Chris Kelly for putting aside his coaching responsibilities & clipboard to lace up the boots.

The Centaurs 2nd XV put out a physical game in the August heat and put the Hamilton defence on their heels early with a kick from Juan Palacio. The Centaurs were able to consistently disrupt Hamilton’s line out. The scoring came early in the game with veteran Centaur Nick Manz driving back two Hamilton defenders to score over the line.

The Centaurs kept the pressure on Hamilton forcing the opposition to make handling errors and passing mistakes. Kyle Wilkins took advantage of a bad pass by intercepting the ball and outpacing the defence to score on an 80 meter run. Kyle offering great support would cross the line again to score and win Man of the Match on the day.

Rugby Phenom Zack Shurtleff scored a try with a show & go from the back of a ruck to speed past the poor post defence.

The Centaurs backline showed fantastic passing letting the ball do the work and Nelson Stoneham with an amazing supporting run would score a try. For the Centaurs to score 5 tries in the first half and win the game with the bonus point 33-15 over Hamilton Hornets and bring home the Abercarn Shield!

The Centaurs 1st XV host the Guelph Redcoats this Saturday at home with a social fundraising – Centaur RACE NIGHT that evening starting at 8:00 pm.

MUST have your horses chosen prior to the races. ONLY $2 entry with all funds going towards OUR club. Lots of Prizes and Giveaways!!

Cheers

NOBs News: Soccer CANCELLED

All:
I just heard from John that BOTSC contacted him this morning and could not raise a team for tomorrows match.  We had 19 players signed up for the event - outstanding!
So unfortunately the game has been CANCELLED.  This will take away your "I played soccer last night" excuse for playing poorly at the Golf outing on Saturday.
Thanks
Phil

NOBs News: GITS Game and upcoming events

GITS Game Review
The GITS were in fine form yesterday, they scored a bunch, but we scored some nice trys as well!  Complements to the grounds crew who were actually able to produce a green and relatively soft field – unbelievable considering the hot dry weather.  Special thanks to the NOBS that made the trip, our Lockport and Hamilton friends, and the GITS that filled out our ranks.  Our forwards were solid in the scrums, but maybe not as mobile as necessary against the fast moving GITS.  Our backs did well with ball in hand with some good ball movement.  But the GITS were able to capitalize on our mistakes one to many times.  We were able to take advantage of their mistakes as well with a quick line out try and a some Brad crash ball.  Can’t forget to mention Ted’s “sprint triathlon” in the morning before the game, now that is a warm up!   A good effort all round, and something too build on.  We still need to work on our numbers to make make the most of our fixtures.

Upcoming Events
Aug 19 – Soccer –This Friday is Soccer night.  Be at the Field by 6:30 for a 7:00 KO.  Green Shirts.  Any questions email John johnguilfoyle99@gmail.com

Aug 20 - Golf, Dave Tait has been busy putting together the event.  If you have any questions please contact Dave dstait@me.com

They will be hosting an over 50's friendly on Sunday Aug 21st. The Lockport O50 side - LARDASS - will be taking on Buffalo (time TBA, most likely 12-1pm) at Delaware Park. There will be a barbecue and plenty of beverages flowing throughout the day. If any NOBS would like to join in the fun and get a game in we'd love to have you come down.  Please pass my email address on to anyone interested, thanks — Ernie Scales <scales92002@yahoo.comLARDASS - (Lockport Alumni Rugby, Drinking, and Social Side

Aug 28 – Cricket – Derek is busy making little sandwiches and polishing his bat and ball in preparation.  A fun and relaxing afternoon event.  Our annual Cricket match against the Burlington Welsh Choir....we will be meeting at the Centaurs clubhouse at 12:30, for a 1:00 PM start.  Players should bring something to eat during the afternoon tea interval...a plate of sandwiches is the usual offering, but anything edible that can be shared is welcome!  We need a good turnout to make this afternoon a success so please come out and try your hand with bat & ball, all equipment is supplied, and white cricket attire is not obligatory!

Contact Game – Tim is working on our Fall fixtures.  As soon as we have more information we will share.  I have attached a NOBS schedule of all events as of right now.  Our next contact game is the 10-a-side, but we are looking for a fixture in advance.

NOBs News: Mike Moroney

David asked me to pass on the following….

NOB’s,

Yesterday Dermot Fogarty and I visit with Mike Moroney at the Sunrise Assisted Living Home on Erin Mills Parkway just south of the 403 in Mississauga.

Mike is in pretty rough shape with a brain tumour and Parkinsons. However when we arrived there at 11am he was waiting for us in a wheelchair in a guest area.

While Mike has difficulty speaking, and the Parkinsons means that he has little facial expression, it was evident that he was understanding our conversation. We talked about rugby games of the past, golf and people that we know in common. We spent an hour with him, and in the end he thanked us for coming.

Mike does not receive many visitors and a visit from NOB’s friends evidently lifted his day. I would like to encourage any of the NOB’s who played with Mike, or know him, to spare an hour and drop in to visit him. I would advise you to go with another person as an hour with a basically uncommunicative person is hard work on your own. If someone wishes to go and does not have a partner either Dermot of I would accompany you.

Please contact  Mike's wife Elaine at 905-601-8756, or emoroney@bell.net to set up a time. The best times are 11am until noon, or 5 to 6pm.
