NOBS Registration 2011/2012, Thursday April 28

Happy Easter Everyone,
Which means the rugby season is upon us and your executive have been working hard to bring you another outstanding line-up for the year.
FIXTURES:
The NOBS fixtures will be posted on our website shortly so it is always available to you. The first game is on Sunday May 1st in Markham against the Belleville Club. We have not played them before, so this should be a superb start.
DUES:
The social dues this year will be the same as last year at $80. Player dues are rising by $10 to cover the increase from Rugby Canada and the ORU and are set at $90. So, for contact players, the total cost is $170. A bargain for most sports.Registration will be held in the clubhouse next Thursday, April 28 after the touch run-around.
Attached is the fillable registration form for contact players. Please bring it along as it must be submitted to the ORU.
THOSE ALSO PLAYING CLUB RUGBY:
As a reminder, NOBS player dues do not cover you to play club rugby. If you are planning to play with the centaurs, you must register with them and that will cover you to play with the NOBS. Please be up to date on your NOBS social dues.
TOUCH:
We will be continuing the touch sessions starting in May on the Tuesday and Thursday nights as well as every Sunday (except long weekends). We are encouraging touch players from all clubs to join in on the Sunday sessions to further develope the touch with the aim of expanding it to a league in the years to come.

I look forward to the season and encourage all of you to participate in the events that are available to you. Without your support, not of this is possible.

On behalf of your executive,
Chris Mant

FW: A Note From The Burnett Family

As you know David was a fine man.  He was a loving and caring husband and father.  He was there for anyone who needed him and helped where he could.

He lived life to the fullest, but was taken too soon.

We are taking his loss very badly and don't know if we will ever get over it, but as David always said 'life goes on'.

We just want to say how grateful and appreciative we are for the overwhelming support we've received from friends far and near and, of course, from the Rugby Club.

Rugby was his life, and he would have been honoured and proud with the 'celebration of life' that was given for him.

We will continue to live one day at a time and try to live our lives as he would have wished.

So, once again, many thanks to everyone for everything.

FW: The Bunny is near

From: Barry

If its raining , it must be spring. And that can only mean the easter bunny is making his way to Sherwood Forest park.

On Saturday April 23  at 10:30 am, the annual egg hunt will commence and all Centaur members are invited.

Rebecca Trapp, the clubs social Director, has devised the hunt so kids of all ages can join in:

This year, there will be gradual starts based on age. The youngest and smallest egg hunters will go first along with those who need parental assistance. An area will be marked for that group. They of course can expand their search as they see fit.

The more agile and speedy age groups will follow starting with the whistle for those around 5 then 8, then 10 and so on.

For those extra speedy 10 and over, the agility ladders and hurdles will be the pathway to the eggs. The older kids will be competing for a few prizes not just the candy filled eggs.

So, put on your easter bonnet and start thinking like bunnies and come down Saturday and get your chocolate on!

EARLY NOTICE - ANNUAL XL TOUR TO FRANCONIA, NH

Reps from other clubs ... please be sure to relay this on to your membership!!

This is a heads-up to all those planning to join the XLs on their annual trip to Franconia, NH for the Old Man of the Mountain Rugby Festival (OMOM).

As most of you know, the XLs are invited to participate in this event each year, which features teams from across the Northeast. We meet in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire to play a couple of games, and party all weekend. Many (most?) bring their "Significant Other" along to enjoy the weekend.

The rugby is great, the venue is idyllic, the fellowship is unforgettable, and the stories are legendary.

Early Details...

  • The weekend for the event is June 03 - 05, 2011. As usual, many of us will be heading down early on the Thursday (June 2nd)

  • If you are intending to join us, we ask that you send a note of that intent to our Tour/Club Captain - Chuck Schandl (chuckschandl@gmail.com).

  • Headquarters and accommodations for our visit will again be at the Stonybrook Motel and Lodge. We have block-booked ten rooms for the XLs. If we book up quickly, we can book some more, but WE HAVE TO MOVE QUICKLY. The Motel is very popular. The ten rooms are blocked to the end of April, but we encourage you to phone and place your booking ASAP. Last year they ran out of rooms, and some players had to find spots elsewhere. When you call/contact, be sure to mention the blocked XL rooms. Contact details...

NOBS WORLD, APRIL 12TH/

Good morning to everyone, were ever you are in the Nobs World.  This Thursday, the 14th we are in the end zone at the east end of the pitch.  To take advantage of the day light we will be starting at 6:30.  The week after; the 21st we will also be in the end zone at 6:30.  We are scheduled to be back on the artificial surface on the 28th, but we will keep you posted on that as it may change.   There are still two more Sundays on the artificial turf.  We start at 1pm and play until 2:30.  There is a cost of $5 each time.  On May 1st we will be in the east end zone, starting at 1pm.

Last Saturday the Burlington Centaurs held a tribute for Dave Burnett.  They did a great job in setting things up to handle the large crowd that was on hand.  The tributes to Dave were very moving and I think everyone who was on hand appreciated the hard work they put into the days event.  Well done.  I also don’t want to forget the Nobs who also contributed to the day.  Your help was most appreciated.  See you on the pitch, Da Thug

Fw: British Newspaper Article about CANADA

Good morning folks, here's an interesting piece of reading from Terry Marshal.

This is a truly amazing article by Kevin Myers The Sunday Telegraph (London).  Please share.

British newspaper salutes Canada . . . This is a good read. It is funny how it took someone in England to put it into words.....

Salute to a brave and modest nation - Kevin Myers , 'The Sunday Telegraph' LONDON :

Until the deaths of Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan , probably almost no one outside their home country had been aware that Canadian troops are deployed in the region.

And as always, Canada will bury its dead, just as the rest of the world, as always will forget its sacrifice, just as it always forgets nearly everything Canada ever does.. It seems that Canada 's historic mission is to come to the selfless aid both of its friends and of complete strangers, and then, once the crisis is over, to be well and truly ignored.

Canada is the perpetual wallflower that stands on the edge of the hall, waiting for someone to come and ask her for a dance. A fire breaks out, she risks life and limb to rescue her fellow dance-goers, and suffers serious injuries. But when the hall is repaired and the dancing resumes, there is Canada, the wallflower still, while those she once helped glamorously cavort across the floor, blithely neglecting her yet again.

That is the price Canada pays for sharing the North American continent with the United States , and for being a selfless friend of Britain in two global conflicts.

For much of the 20th century, Canada was torn in two different directions: It seemed to be a part of the old world, yet had an address in the new one, and that divided identity ensured that it never fully got the gratitude it deserved.

Yet it's purely voluntary contribution to the cause of freedom in two world wars was perhaps the greatest of any democracy. Almost 10% of Canada 's entire population of seven million people served in the armed forces during the First World War, and nearly 60,000 died. The great Allied victories of 1918 were spearheaded by Canadian troops, perhaps the most capable soldiers in the entire British order of battle.

Canada was repaid for its enormous sacrifice by downright neglect, it's unique contribution to victory being absorbed into the popular memory as somehow or other the work of the 'British.'

The Second World War provided a re-run. The Canadian navy began the war with a half dozen vessels, and ended up policing nearly half of the Atlantic against U-boat attack. More than 120 Canadian warships participated in the Normandy landings, during which 15,000 Canadian soldiers went ashore on D-Day alone.

Canada finished the war with the third-largest navy and the fourth largest air force in the world. The world thanked Canada with the same sublime indifference as it had the previous time.

Canadian participation in the war was acknowledged in film only if it was necessary to give an American actor a part in a campaign in which the United States had clearly not participated - a touching scrupulousness which, of course, Hollywood has since abandoned, as it has any notion of a separate Canadian identity.

So it is a general rule that actors and filmmakers arriving in Hollywood keep their nationality - unless, that is, they are Canadian. Thus Mary Pickford, Walter Huston, Donald Sutherland, Michael J. Fox, William Shatner, Norman Jewison, David Cronenberg, Alex Trebek, Art Linkletter, Mike Weir and Dan Aykroyd have in the popular perception become American, and Christopher Plummer, British.

It is as if, in the very act of becoming famous, a Canadian ceases to be Canadian, unless she is Margaret Atwood, who is as unshakably Canadian as a moose, or Celine Dion, for whom Canada has proved quite unable to find any takers.

Moreover, Canada is every bit as querulously alert to the achievements of its sons and daughters as the rest of the world is completely unaware of them. The Canadians proudly say of themselves - and are unheard by anyone else - that 1% of the world's population has provided 10% of the world's peacekeeping forces.

Canadian soldiers in the past half century have been the greatest peacekeepers on Earth - in 39 missions on UN mandates, and six on non-UN peacekeeping duties, from Vietnam to East Timor, from Sinai to Bosnia.

Yet the only foreign engagement that has entered the popular non-Canadian imagination was the sorry affair in Somalia , in which out-of-control paratroopers murdered two Somali infiltrators.. Their regiment was then disbanded in disgrace - a uniquely Canadian act of self-abasement for which, naturally, the Canadians received no international credit.

So who today in the United States knows about the stoic and selfless friendship its northern neighbour has given it in Afghanistan ?

Rather like Cyrano de Bergerac , Canada repeatedly does honourable things for honourable motives, but instead of being thanked for it, it remains something of a figure of fun. It is the Canadian way, for which Canadians should be proud, yet such honour comes at a high cost. This past year more grieving Canadian families knew that cost all too tragically well.

Lest we forget.

*********************
Please pass this on to any of your friends or relatives who served in the Canadian Forces or anyone who is proud to be Canadian; it is a wonderful tribute to those who choose to serve their country and the world in our quiet Canadian way.

FW: NOBS WORLD; A TRIBUTE TO DAVE BURNETT

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen.  Since the word came out

last Saturday on the passing of Dave we have received an

explosion of emails like never before.  Daily tributes come in about

Dave; it is quite humbling.  We are so privileged to have know Dave

and shared time on earth with him.  In Dave’s obituary, in the Hamilton

Spectator there was a line in it that made me chuckle and at the same time

it summed him up perfectly.  “David was also a fanatical rugby player and

will be sorely missed.”  Yes he will be missed.  Dave had a life long love

affair with rugby and rugby loved him back.  I know we all did.

Last Sunday 40 something rugby players gather in Burlington to play

touch rugby in a tribute to Dave.  There was pushing and shoving,

finger pointing, accusations, and just plain cheating.  Dave would have

loved it.  It was expected that there would have been a larger crowd than

normal up in the bar, but it was packed.

This Saturday, the 9th there will be a celebration of David’s life at the Burlington

Centaurs Rugby Club, 5278 Fairview St; starting at 1pm.  Come out an celebrate

the life of our Super Gnome.  I would like to close this with an email I received

from Phil Walton.  “Of all the great immortals that made up the old boys….he

was the most immortal to me.  Just unbelievable.”

FW: Dave Burnett - A celebration of life

The news of Dave Burnett's sudden passing has been a shock to us all but none more so than to Diane and sons Jason and Adam. They are extremely moved by the tremendous outpouring of compassion being expressed by all that knew Dave. The family will be having a private funeral and hope you will respect their need to deal with this tragic loss.

Recognizing the impact Dave has had on the Burlington Centaurs and the rugby community across the province and country, the family would like you to join them this Saturday, April 9, at Sherwood Forest Park, as the Burlington Centaurs will host a reception celebrating Dave's life. This to take place from 1-4pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the National Pancreas foundation would be appreciated by the family.

An online registry can be found at Smiths Funeral Home for condolences.

Sincerley,

Barry Goldberg
