NOBS 30TH ANNIVERSARY WORLD MAY 30TH 2012

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, all across the NOBS 30th Anniversary World.  That's right, 30 years and the authorities haven't closed us down, but at times I am sure the ORU would have liked to.  We have a big day planned for July 22nd; when we are hoping to gather all NOBS young and old, from near and far.  Stay tuned for more on this in the weeks to come.
The season is now underway, and last Sunday we hosted Peterborough in our home opener.  The Krocks played their standard hard grinding style.  It looked at first as if the NOBS would run away with the game, but after shaking off the rust of their 401 drive, they started to battle back. They finally tied the score with 7 minutes to play only to see the NOBS move the ball down field to score.  Time was running out, but the Krocks, on a try from the eventual"Man of the Match" Pat Burns scored a try at the final whistle!  Both sides knew they had been in a game.
Great to see many former NOBS in the crowd, taking on the match.  Many thanks to Christina Flores, Rolf Thomas, Jason Leek, Pope John Noble, Pablo, and Kevin Blosca for all their help in making the day an event.  Lets not forget our bar tender Barry Goldberg. Thanks folks.
Just another reminder that there is no game in Burlington this Sunday; but there is a game between the GITS and Old Blue at Sunnybrook and everyone not going to Franconia is invited to join in.  Kickoff is set for 1pm; but stay tuned as I have been informed the venue may change.  Next game for us is June 10th in Markham.  More on that next week.
Touch as always, will be run in Burlington on Sunday at 1pm.  I would like to close things off with a bit of good news for the Old boy's community.  For the first time in years, 2 oldboys games were played on Sunday.  The Krocks of course played the NOBS, while at the Beach, Markham/Lions played the GITS. See you  on the pitch, Da Thug

Just a reminder of the Geniuses from Down Under

Jono Gibbs, Chiefs
"Nobody in Rugby should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein."

Rodney So'ialo, Hurricanes, on University
"I'm going to graduate on time, no matter how long it takes."

Colin Cooper, Hurricanes Head Coach
"You guys line up alphabetically by height." And, "You guys pair up in groups of three, then line up in a circle."

Chris Masoe (Hurricanes) on whether he had visited the Pyramids during his visit to Egypt .
"I can't really remember the names of the clubs that we went to."

Colin Cooper on Paul Tito
"He's a guy who gets up at six o'clock in the morning regardless of what time it is."

Kevin Senio ( Auckland ), on Night Rugby vs Day Games
"It's basically the same, just darker."

David Nucifora ( Auckland ) talking about Troy Flavell
"I told him, 'Son, what is it with you... Is it ignorance or apathy?' He said, 'David, I don't know and I don't care.'

David Holwell (Hurricanes) when asked about the upcoming season:
"I want to reach for 150 or 200 points this season, whichever comes first."

Ma'a Nonu
"Colin has done a bit of mental arithmetic with a calculator."

Phil Waugh
"We actually got the winning try three minutes from the end but then they scored."

Jerry Collins
"I've never had major knee surgery on any other part of my body."

Tony Brown
"That kick was absolutely unique, except for the one before it which was identical."

Tana Umaga
"I owe a lot to my parents, especially my mother and father."

Doc Mayhew
"Sure there have been injuries and deaths in rugby, but none of them serious."

Anton Oliver
"If history repeats itself, I should think we can expect the same thing again."

Ewan McKenzie
"I never comment on referees and I'm not going to break the habit of a lifetime for that prat."

Murray Mexted
(1) "Andy Ellis the 21 year old, who turned 22 a few weeks ago"
(2) "He scored that try after only 22 seconds - totally against the run of play."
(3) "I would not say he (Rico Gear) is the best left winger in the Super14, but there are none better."
(4) "Well, either side could win it, or it could be a draw."
(5) "Strangely, in slow motion replay, the ball seemed to hang in the air for even longer."

AND THE BEST

Murray Deaker:
"Have you ever thought of writing your autobiography?"
Tana Umaga:
"On what?"

NOBS WORLD "JIMMY WANTS YOU1'

Good afternoon rugby fans all across the Nobs World.  Don’t forget the game Sunday at 1pm; when Peterborough shows up to do battle.  They are hard men, playing a hard game so get there early, suit up, warm up and be ready to go for 1.  But more important; our mate Jimmy Newcombe wants to remind everyone that despite a game is going on, so is touch!  We have extended an invitation to Peterborough to come down and join in touch also.  Something for everyone.

An update on our schedule.  There is “no” game on June 3rd.  That game against the GITS has been moved to June 24th in Burlington.  The XLS game in Brampton on the 24th has been scrubbed.  The Gits have secured an alternate game on June 3rd , when they take on the Scottish 3rds.  The game is tentatively set for Sunnybrook but stay tuned for an update on that game.  The GITS are also extending an invitation to all NOBs players not going to Franconia to join in.

You can also pencil in 2 soccer dates.  Friday July 13th [Is this wise?] and Friday August 10th.  As soon as I hear more from the selection committee of Guilfoyle and Crossfield, I will let you know.

That’s it!  See you on the pitch Sunday, Da Thug

FW: NOBS 2012 planner

Good afternoon rugby enthusiasts.   It seems I have forgotten to send out a very important aspect of our season. {Well according to the recent barrage of emails, it is}  This is our schedule for 2012; which I hope to be updating very soon.

Here are a few things that you should note that are different.

1.   June 3rd we are scheduled to play the GITS in Burlington.  As it stands right now it is a TBA.  The game in Franconia with the XL’S is still a go.

2.   The game on June 24th; Gits vs. XL’S is no longer, due to field availability.  The Nobs/Gits game may be moved from June 3rd to this date. TBA

3.   The game on July 29th is in Burlington, not Oakville.  It is our 30th Anniversary game.  More information on this to come.

4.   August 12th is our golf date.

5.   We still have yet to set dates for Cricket and our 2 soccer fixtures

New Addition for Sunday's Home Match

Hi All,
For our first home game this year, we have added a little extra. Kayla Chafe, the athletic therapist for the Centaurs will be out Sunday. Her services include taping,  stretching and Active Release Techniques for those that want to make use of this. Treat yourself!
You need to be there and ready by 12:30 to provide time before the game. She will also be available during the game if there are on-field issues to contend with.
We will need all of you able bodies to come out Sunday so we have numbers to match Peterborough. As the new Toronto GITS are hosting Markham on Sunday as well, the available players are reduced, so please get out for a superb match.
Cheers,
Chris

FW: XLs - Invitation to Franconia

Despite what Andy Terry thinks after he heard of the invitation; The XL’S would like to invite along any Nob who is interested in traveling with them to Franconia, New Hampshire.

An open invitation to our "NOBBY" friends...

As you are all aware, the XLs participate each year in a "Rugby Festival" in Franconia, New Hampshire. The festival is known as the "Old Man of he Mountain Rugby Festival" (OMOM), and has been going on for a few decades. It is regularly attended by teams from Eastern Canada and the Northeastern USA. For reference, the location is an easily-managed 7-8 hours drive from Toronto.

The festival will run June 01 - 03 this year, and we are hoping that you will consider joining us!

Most of the players come with their wives/significant others, as it is a friendly competition and the area has lots to offer. In addition to being a beautiful spot in the White Mountains, there are lots of villages and shops for the ladies to explore.

We stay at the Stonybrook Motel & Lodge (www.stonybrookmotel.com). We have pre-booked a block of rooms. If you are interested, we suggest you contact them ASAP, as the rooms do tend to go rather quickly!

A decent number try each year to arrive on the Thursday before (May 31st this year). For those that do, Chuck Schandl hosts a wonderful Lobster Dinner at the motel. For those that plan to show up Friday, the XLs put on a fantastic BBQ that evening, complete with bonfire afterwards. It's a great night.

We play two games of about 50 minutes on Saturday, usually one n the morning and one in the afternoon. The organizers clear off the local glider airfield; we play in idyllic conditions surrounded by the White Mountains.

On the Saturday evening we have traditionally attended the tournament dinner at a local restaurant. This is a fun event (famous for the Nigel Davenport Pole-Dance") that offers the opportunity to commune not only with your own crowd, but with players from all over.

We have attached a flyer for your consideration. We hope that you'll come along this year!

If you have any questions, you can contact Chuck Schandl (chuckschandl@gmail.com) and/or Scott Hume (shume@rogers.com) and we'd be happy to help.
