Press Release August 24th, 2010
September 4th, Burlington Centaurs Rugby Football Club announces a full afternoon of exciting, fast paced rugby.
The Ontario Blues and B.C. Bears will face off for what is now a game of pride at 4:30. Although in 2009 they were runner up and winner respectively, this year they find themselves battling it out to not be the holder of the "Wooden spoon". Both teams found the Atlantic Rock and Prairie Wolfpack much improved teams this year and Ontario the closest to challenging both winners thus far. Over the years there have been many titanic battles between B.C. and Ontario teams of all ages and none more memorable than at the senior men's provincial level. Places for the Canada "A" squad selection to go forward into the America's Championship, played in the weeks following the conclusion of the Canadian Rugby Championship are still open and there is much to play for. After the great displays against the British Police and England Counties earlier in the year, the Blues will be out to prove their recent losses are a mere blip in performance and they are still the team to beat. The Bears are also "licking their wounds" also after their losses and will be determined to prove they are a better team than Ontario.
Don't miss it, it is sure to be a "Firecracker" of a game.
Beginning at 1:30 the Guelph Gryphons meet the Brock Badgers in their pre-season trial game. Both teams will be fielding a mix of veteran players from around the province and elsewhere and new rookie players coming into their respective university teams. Many talented players will be not only "strutting their stuff" to impress the team coaches, but also for the opportunity to be spotted by the Blues and Canadian coaching staff.
At 3:15, an exhibition game of the now Olympic sport of 7-a-side rugby will take place between the Ontario Blues and Niagara Thunder. The game will be played in the finals format of 2 ten minute halves with a one minute midway break. Each team will have a squad of 10 players 7 on the field and 3 substitutes.
The whole area will fenced and licensed and food and beverages will be available all afternoon sponsored by the Dickens, Etalia, s.b. Prime and Rude Native restaurants. These sponsors are also offering discounted prices for meals at their establishment's downtown with the showing of a game ticket or stub.
The field is less then 1km from the Appleby GO station so a great opportunity to ride safe and enjoy the afternoon. There is ample parking at or near the ground. Sherwood Forest Park is at the end of Fairview Street east of Appleby Line, south of the QEW in Burlington.
