NOBS WORLD OCTOBER 31, 2012

Good afternoon rugby fans across the NOBS World, as we mop up after 5 straight days of rain, not to mention hurricane Sandy.  All that will be forgotten by Sunday at 1pm, when the East / West game kicks off at the Cru. More on all of this in a bit, but let’s look at what happened last weekend.

On a cold wet Saturday morning at the Square, a group of old boys rugby players gathered to take part in Markham’s Cup Day Game.  From what I understand, somebody won by a try, but no one is saying what side?   Mr. Bloska reports it was a wet, expensive day.  Well….I guess there’s a first time for everything.  Scott Hendry who is to play internationally for Canada in November said; “It was cold and wet; a good start to a full day of rugby.”   Andrew Jackson’ our resident Geordie stated, “it was a good run out, conditions were bliss, wind, rain and a guad mire of a pitch; perfect.”  I guess in Newcastle, the weather is a bit different in late October!  Well done to all of you who made the trip and played the game.

This Sunday as stated is the East / West game at 1pm at the Cru.  This is the final game of the 2012 season.  The Burnett family will be on hand to usher a new era of the game as we re-name it after our favourite Super Gnome, Dave.   The game in the past has always been good, with the West having 2 wins and there has been a tie in the first 3 contests.   Come join us afterwards in the clubhouse, for food, drinks and a special presentation.  This Sunday only, touch will be run at the Cru, so that all can take in the festivities.

See you at the Cru, Da Thug

FW: Ottawa Irish Fall Old Boys Tens Festival ~ follow-up item, registration

Gentlemen, on November the 3rd, the day before our East / West game, the Ottawa Irish are having a 10’s festival.  It sounds like a great day and something in the future we should pencil into our fixtures.   If you’re interested in going you can contact Tim Frank at tim.frank@sympatico.ca

From: Tim Frank [mailto:tim.frank@sympatico.ca]

Gents,

Since the aim is to try and get as many warm bodies to take part in the games on the 3rd of November,  accordingly, we are pleased to add the following possibility to deal with the registration requirement:

To greatly simplify the issue of how to deal with unregistered players who wish to play,  Rugby Canada has provided us with a very attractive option that will allow us to register players on the day. We will collect $10 from anyone who requires this option. This will afford the same level of insurance as regular registration ~  BUT ONLY FOR THE DAY!

Obviously, this does not apply to any Old Boy who is already registered with their club.

So, to recap:

1)      Registration, for the currently non-registered, has been sorted out in a simple and cost-effective way.

2)      Cheap (free) accommodation is available so the drive home can be deferred until “safe”.

3)      Beer will be plentiful and “on sale”.

4)      Food will be plentiful and cheap.

5)      Did I mention beer?

6)      This will be a great event and a superb opportunity to close out the rugby year in a real rugby atmosphere.

There are not many excuses left!

I’d appreciate any advance indication that you can provide as to interest and likely numbers.

We hope to see many of you and/or your club-mates at Twin Elm on the 3rd.

Rgds,

Tim Frank

Gentlemen,

A few of minor updates/additions:

1)      The First Annual “Ottawa Irish Fall Old Boys Tens Festival Nov. 3rd”  is just a component of an entire day of rugby that will celebrate and show-off  Twin Elm Rugby Park, and cap an excellent year of Rugby in Eastern Ontario. There will be club matches (friendlies) at all levels.

2)      To alleviate both potential cost and maximize safety, the Founders’ lounge will be available Saturday night, Nov.3rd  as a makeshift dormitory for anyone who wants to stay over (from out of town, or in town....) ....bring an air mattress/foam pad and a sleeping bag. Don’t drink and drive....just drink... and get as early a start home as you wish on Sunday morning (almost as good as a mini-tour!). If there are sufficient overnighters, one of the Twin Elm Directors has offered to provide a waffle breakfast.,...and he is one of those “syrup snobs” ™ who does not believe in  table syrup....its maple syrup or nothing.... J

3)      There will be some excellent live rugby on TV as well as on the fields, and the beer inventory at the Park is too high for this time of year so will be “priced to clear”; food will be “crock-pot” dishes (beans, stew, etc. but plentiful and cheap).

I’d appreciate any advance indication that you can provide as to interest and likely numbers.

We hope to see many of you and/or your club-mates at Twin Elm on the 3rd.

Rgds,

Tim Frank

FW: GAME THIS SATURDAY AT THE SQUARE

Good afternoon rugby fans.  Not many games left this season; but this Saturday at 10:30am, it’s Cup Day at Fletchers Fields.  Markham has set this up for the Oldboy’s and it is shaping up to be a good game.  Come on out and join in this spirited affair that precedes the senior men’s rugby finals.  A full day of rugby.

November 4th is our last fixture; the 4th Annual East / West game, to be held at the Cru; with a 1pm kickoff.  For this week only, touch will also be going on at the Cru.  We have a full plate of rugby, good food planned, along with a presentation as we re-name the East / West game.  Come join us and the Burnett family for this event.  Looking forward to seeing you there, Da Thug

CALLING ALL XLs (and Wanna-Bees)!!!

This Sunday we host the World at Brampton. Time is running out on this season, so this is a great chance for some great rugby!

The Dastardly NOBs (et al) will all pile into their NOB-mobiles and head up to try and subvert the beauty and majesty that is XL Rugby. A classic battle between dark & evil vs. shiny & good.

We are looking for a great (at least decent) turnout to ward them off. Haul out the old red-and-grey (Mark Radwanski would love to sell you a new one) and come support the side. We are hoping all our good buddies from clubs all over will be there to shore everything up.

Chef Chuck is laying out some grub, and the weather looks soggy and cool; perfect for rugby.

Fw: Nobs vs Chambrays

Good afternoon rugby fans all across thee NOBS World.  Below is an email from our fixtures secretary, Peter Allan.  He's dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's, in anticipation for tonight's battle with the Staff College at the Cru.  Environment Canada, has said we will have a sunny/cloudy mix, with a 30% chance of rain and 10c for our 6:30 kickoff.
Tonight's game in which we would like everyone there early, to  be dressed, warmed up and ready to go for a 6:30 kickoff, is one of our longest running fixtures, reaching back to the twentieth century, when we were led on to the pitch at Sunnybrook, by the likes of Crossfield and Doyle.  Tonight's opponent will feign inexperience, cry lack of games and in general try to lull us asleep; but don't buy into it!  There have been games where we're 2 trys down after 5 minutes, before they have pounded us out of our stupor.  These are battle hardened soldiers, but so are we from the tough campaign we have had this year.   Be prepared!

Where the yellow strip tonight to take advantage of our superior visibility!

See you at the Cru, Da Thug

NOBS WORLD, OCTOBER 4TH 2012, DOME, FINAL FIXTURES.

Good evening rugby fans; where ever you are in the NOBS World.   As I type this, the last Thursday evening out doors is drawing to an end.   Next week we are indoors, but more on that later.

Our final 5 Sundays of the season are now confirmed, with 1 change.

1. Thanksgiving weekend there is no game, but touch is run in Burlington, as it is every Sunday of the year. **Please note, over the next few weekends we will be moving over to the artificial surface from 1pm to 2:30pm.  We'll let you know when we make the switch.
2.  October 10th is our annual game with the Staff College at the Cru.  Kickoff is 6:30, but come early and get ready to go.
3.  October 14th.  This game was originally to be in Burlington.  That game has been cancelled, but when one door closes, another opens.  The GITS are travelling to Peterborough and they have invited us along to bolster their numbers.  They already have a strong crew going there but are still looking  for more.  Ray "Boyo" Hopkin would love to hear from you at rayhopkin@gmail.com  Our man Pablo has already thrown his sombrero in the ring, and has room for a few carpoolers.  He can be reached at pmalacar@msn.com but don't be late.  This is going to be a great fixture.
4.  October 21st it in Brampton against the XL'S.   Can you say "Chuck's Kitchen?"
5.  October 27th, a Saturday morning its on to Markham for a 10:30 kickoff on Cup Day
6.  November 4th it is the end of the season, 4th Annual East / West showdown at the Cru.

So you probably have seen Jack's email on the dome.  We start next week, October the 11th.   This year something new is that we have the dome on Tuesday.  Here's what you need to know.  You snooze, you loose.   If you played last year, you have first priority on playing, but you have to let us know ASAP, or your spot may be given away.  Please read Jack's email.  Don't say you haven't been warned.  Have a happy, safe Thanksgiving, Da Thug

DOME DAYS ARE BACK AGAIN !

NOBs in the DOME for 2012 /13  is expanded as this season we have both Tues.  and Thurs. sessions

Starting Thurs. Oct. 11  NOBs touch is again in the Dome at Burlington (Dome #  1 this year ).    Time 7 to 9pm.   We continue thru’ to April 25/13.

Cost is same as last year  $ 135 and participants must be a paid up playing or social member of the Nobs.  Also remember men must be  over 35 .

Number of players is limited with priority going to those who played & paid last year.

To sign up let me or any exec member know  and chqs , payable to “NOBS  RFC”  need to be in  ASAP .  We have to pay up front for the whole season.

Nobs Bubbler Rules (Laws for the purists)  again apply  and there will be some updates forthcoming that will, I believe , enhance the game for us all.

.  Jason Leek is coordinating the refs and we are looking for volunteers to ref  for 2 or 3 nights each throughout the year.  If  you can commit, it will  be much appreciated

   and  please let Jason know.

Starting Tues. Oct 17  we are in Dome #2  . Time 7 to 9pm  We continue thru’ to March 27/13.

We are proposing that on Tuesdays half the field will be for soccer and half for touch. There will be a net separating the games.   Cost for Tues. is $125 and again

participants must be paid up playing or social members of the Nobs and men over 35.  Touch will be same format as Thurs.   We will  see how the half & half  works out

and can make adjustments if  needed.

The Bubbler World Cup is again up for grabs with monthly games on the Thurs. session and teams will be assembled following registration

IMPORTANT :  EACH PLAYER MUST BRING A WHITE AND A COLOURED SHIRT TO EVERY SESSION   (  AND THAT’S  WHITE AND CLOURED  NOT GREY !!)

Let’s  have another good year of fun and camaraderie.  Whining and bitching we don’t need !

NOBS WORLD, OCTOBER 2ND 2012 , SUNNYBROOK SUNDAY AND UPCOMING GAMES

Good afternoon rugby fans, all across the NOBS World.  A special shout out to NOBS  president Chris Mant, who I understand  is on the mend now.  Get better soon Chris.

Last Sunday, we made our way down the Gardiner / 401 to play the GITS at Sunnybrook Park.  More on that at the end, but let’s first deal with the upcoming events.

We are now into October with a full slate of games to take us to the East / West final on November 4th.   As always touch is being run, every Sunday in Burlington.  Here’s the fixtures.

1.    October 10th, vs. The Staff College @ the Cru.  This is a Wednesday evening game under the lights, kicking off at 6:30pm.  It’s very important to be early, dressed and ready to rumble.

2.    October 14th.  This game is still a TBA to be played in Burlington.  Stay tuned!

3.    October 21st, at Brampton vs. the XLS.  “All are invited to come out and help bolster the XLS numbers!”  A 1pm kickoff.

4.    October 27th, at Markham as it is the annual “Cup Day” classic.   This game is on a Saturday, kicking off at 10:30 to facilitate anyone who would like to scoot up to the Square to catch the Cup Finals.

5.    November 4th, at the Cru.  The 4th Annual East /West Game.  Kickoff is 1pm.  More details on this event in the near future, but with the formation of the GITS, it should be a heated affair.

So, I can hear you.  How did we get on in the battle of Sunnybrook?  We knew we were in trouble when we arrived.  We were relegated to the east pitch, that was barely marked.  NOBS captain Bloska, immediately stated that the game would  proceed under protest and an official complaint  would be filed with the GITS game convener.   Across the pitch was an assemble gang of thugs,  tough guys, hard drinking Scot’s, and people out on probation for the day!   Those were just the supporters.  We knew this was to be a take no prisoners event.  The game saw trys being scored back and forth.  Big hits, and a yellow card issued!   The game  was ended early by the referee with a few minutes to play and one of the combatants sprawled on the field, unable to make it off the pitch under his own steam.  According to the referee, the game ended in a tie!   After the match, the teams gathered in a small dark pub near the corner of Woodbine and Danforth.   At first things were a bit icy, but with a few drinks all was forgotten.  This is rugby after all. Looking forward to our next visit there, a good time was had by all.  Well almost everyone.

This weekend its Thanksgiving, so there is no game, but touch, as always, is on in Burlington.  See you on the pitch at the Cru, Wednesday, Da Thug.
